Becoming Minimalist: 10 Ways to Declutter Your Home

Becoming Minimalist: 10 Ways to Declutter Your Home

We all have items of personal value that we proudly display in our homes. However, there’s a fine line between collecting handpicked items and cluttering. If you have difficulties giving up your personal belongings, or if you consider every single item a part of your personal collection, then you have a cluttering problem. Luckily, you can easily declutter your home and switch to minimalism. Minimalism breathes with an effortless beauty and timeless value because it features a clean, tidy, organized and stylish look. So, here’s how you can declutter your home and create a trendy, minimalist ambiance.

Have a sorting system

Before you tackle this project, you should develop a sorting system that will help you keep the entire decluttering process simple and efficient. Any kind of method that works for you will work for your home, too. However, if you don’t have any idea how to sort out your items, use the Three-Box Method – you have a to-keep box, to-get-rid-of box and to-store box. So, as you clean up, you should sort items in these boxes, and then just follow the labels.

Zone it out

Instead of cleaning your house all at once, you should divide it into different zones, otherwise, you’ll just be all over the place. You can declutter your home room by room, and even divide each room into different zones to make cleaning easier. You can even come up with a list of areas that require decluttering to stay organized.

Play some tunes

Although this isn’t exactly a decluttering tip, it will help you get into the cleaning mood, which is important to keep your spirits up. If you change your mindset, decluttering won’t seem as a tedious task anymore, but an opportunity to listen to your favorite songs and get your space in order. Just make sure that the music you play is energetic and lively.

Sort out your shelves

Shelves are often cluttered with unnecessary items, such as books we never read, memorabilia, old photos, souvenirs, figurines, etc. The moment you declutter your shelves, you’ll notice that your space feels less crowded. When decluttering your shelves, follow the rule of three, and place three non-book items per shelf.

Organize a yard sale

Organizing a yard sale is a great way to declutter your home and keep it organized, while earning a buck or two at the same time. Just throwing your items might be off-putting, and you can quickly give up. However, if you see certain items as an opportunity to earn money, you might feel motivated to find what else you can sell.

Every item should have its place

Every item in your home should have its own place, and contribute to your home décor. If you can’t fit it in, or don’t have anywhere to put it, just sell, donate or simply throw it away. You’ll keep cluttering your home if you can’t part ways with excess items.

Try the 12-12-12 challenge

Who says that cleaning can’t be fun? Turn decluttering into a fun activity and try the 12-12-12 challenge – you should find 12 items to donate, 12 to throw away and 12 to be returned to their place. Your family can play it, too, and help you out.

When did you use it?

Think of the last time you used a certain item. If you haven’t in the last 6 months, or even more, then you should get rid of it, especially if you don’t even remember having it. You haven’t missed it for years, you won’t miss it in the future.

Embrace multifunctionality

Instead of focusing only on the style of an item, ask yourself whether it’s functional. When choosing your furniture, choose pieces that have compartments and drawers for storing. A bed with drawers underneath or a settee with a storage compartment can keep your space both stylish and organized.

Have plenty of storage

Having enough storage is key to keeping your home clutter-free and organized. Introduce additional storage solutions, such as decorative boxes, shelves or hidden compartments. Minimalism is so popular in Australia that all Aussie design enthusiasts keep clutter at bay by renting additional storage in Sydney and other metropolises. So, if you don’t have enough storage space, make sure to rent a storage unit where you can keep all excess items with personal value.

Once you’ve decluttered your home, you can emphasize its beautiful features and design. Minimalism will make your home stylish and motivate you to keep clutter under control.
