How ice dams are formed?
Ice dams are formed when the temperature of the roof over the attic increases and melts the snow underside of the roof. The water travels down all the way between the snow and shingles and enters the eave of the roof. This water stays cool there and turns into ice because of its freezing temperature. The roofs with flat pitch have more chances of ice dams. Even the snow and ice can be piled up in the gutter near the eaves. One of the main keys to protect your new roof from ice dams is to keep the roof cold; a cold roof gives an extra layer of protection in winters. A warmer roof allows the snow to melt on the edge of the roof. Here are some steps which will let you enjoy your winter free from ice dams and require less energy for performance.

Proper ventilation to ridge and eaves
Installation of ridge vents and soffit vents do the work for cold air to circulate very easily. Both the vents should have equal size of openings for about 1 square fit. Install baffles for the air to pass through easily without distracting by any object.
Seal the hatch
An unsealed hatch can be a reason for heat to trap inside the house. Cover the attic hatch with weather strips made up of foam with a foil in front of a board. These strips will be held strongly together with the help of an aluminum tape.
Seal the surroundings of chimney
The space between the chimney and the house should be sealed with a fire sealant in L shaped. Usage of foam or insulation is not safe from fire.
Seal all electrical penetrations
Electrical wires should be sealed and pipe vents with a fire sealant. Also check for spots where insulated wires are stained black with dirt.
